- Remember mulching is a key in retaining moisture in the soil.
- After your tree(s) has been established in about 2 years.
- Then this will allow your tree(s) to withstand a wider range of water conditions on its own because it has a proper root structure.
PRUNING
- Pruning during dormancy is the most common practice.
- It is usually best to wait until the coldest part of winter has passed.
- For trees that bloom in the spring, prune when their fade flowers.
- Trees and shrubs that flower in mid-to late summer should be pruned in winter or early spring.
- Tree pruning steps are: prune after 3-4 years, 5-7 years and after 15 years.
- Our tree(s) and shrubs are shipped already pruned for planting.
FERTILIZER
- A high nitrogen fertilizer is a good source of fertilize to use.
- Lightly fertilize after the tree is established usually after 1 month.
- The fertilize should be applied so as not to touch the base of the tree.
- after the tree is fully established, fertilize once a year.
UNROOTED STAKES PLANTING GUIDE
- To plant uprooted cuttings successfully, the bottom of the cutting should be placed about 6-8” into the ground.
- Top of the cutting should extend 8-10” out of the ground.
- The fertilize should be applied so as not to touch the base of the tree.
- The cutting should be high enough to be out of the shade cast by surrounding vegetation, such as grasses or forbs. This allows the bottom of the cutting to act like a straw and pull up the cutting, keeping the roots, stems and leaves hydrated.
- A high nitrogen fertilizer is good.
- Lightly fertilize after the tree is established.
- Don’t touch the base of the tree with the fertilize.
